Maritime infrastructures
ArcelorMittal’s hot rolled steel sheet pile sections have been used to build maritime infrastructures for over a hundred years. Through innovation and continuous improvement, combined walls such as the HZ®-M system, Z and U-type sections, or AS 500 flat sheet piles form one of the most advanced solutions for constructing or deepening port and other maritime structures.
Based on long-term experience, steel structures in a marine environment can be designed for a service life of 50 years and more. Besides, ArcelorMittal developed a special steel grade that is more resistant to corrosion in seawater: AMLoCor®.
Inland waterways infrastructures
Rivers are used for shipping large quantities of bulk material and other special goods in an environmentally-friendly way. Navigation in rivers requires a minimum draft and a specific channel width. River transport is the best alternative to railway and road transport, more environmentally-friendly and usually cheaper.
Canals are man-made structures that are built specifically for navigation use, either for leisure boats or for large vessels / barges. Canals usually connect rivers, but sometimes they by-pass rivers. Canals have a specific gauge which determines the maximum size of the vessels allowed on the canal.
